Growth, mortality and exploitation of buccaneer anchovy (Encrasicholina punctifer Fowler, ۱۹۳۸) from the north Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

The population parameters of Encrasicholina punctifer (buccaneer anchovy) from commercial fisheries in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea coastal waters were studied from October ۲۰۱۴ to September ۲۰۱۵. A total of ۱۳۹۵۱ length-frequency data were collected monthly by pair-boat purse seine and beach seine methods. The asymptotic length (L∞) and Von Bertalanffy growth function (K) were ۱۱.۵ cm and K=۱.۴ per year, respectively. The value of to was calculated as -۰.۱۴ year. Longevity was estimated as ۲ years. The total length ranged from ۲.۹ to ۱۰.۱ cm, with an average of ۶.۵ cm. The probability of capture was calculated in total length as L۲۵=۶.۰۵ cm, L۵۰=۶.۴۸ cm and L۷۵=۶.۹۳ cm.  Four cohorts were distinguished annually with mean lengths of ۴.۵۶, ۵.۷۷, ۷.۲۱ and ۸.۵۰ cm. The length-weight relationship was determined as W= ۰.۰۰۵۱ L ۳.۱۱۱۴. Total, natural and fishing mortality parameters were estimated as ۶.۱۵, ۲.۸۴ and ۳.۳۲ yr-۱ respectively. The current rate of exploitation (E) was ۰.۵۴, and the values of exploitation ratio was found reasonable for current fishing effort. From the yield-per-recruit analysis, Emax, was estimated as ۰.۹۱.
