چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. Complications of cancer lead patients to use a variety of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) that can affect their quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study was to investigate the role of CAM on the quality of life of patients with end-stage cancer. Methods: This cross-sectional study included ۲۳۸ patients with end-stage cancer in southeastern Iran. Patients were selected using the available sampling method by referring the researcher to oncology centers and doctors' offices from March to July ۲۰۲۱. Demographic information questionnaire, The EORTC core quality of life questionnaire and CAM questionnaire were used to collect data. The data was analyzed using SPSS ۲۵. Results: The present study showed that the QOL of cancer patients with the final disease was almost ideal. ۸۵.۷% of participants used at least one type of CAM last year. In addition, ۴۵.۴% of people used only one type of CAM, ۳۰.۳% used two types of CAM, ۶.۷% used three types of CAM, and ۳.۴% used four to five types of CAM last year. When considering prayer among all CAM users, the social aspect of QOL and the global quality of life were significantly higher in CAMs compared to non-CAM users. Cancer history, income, and use of CAMs were associated with two subscales of symptoms and function of QOL. The score of QOL symptoms and function was higher in CAM users compared to non-CAM users. Of all the study variables, only the use of CAM was associated with global QOL. Conclusion: The present study showed that CAM users have a higher global QOL score than non-CAM users, which can improve QOL symptoms and function in cancer patients. Therefore, it can be suggested that using CAM in these patients to improve health status and increase the dimensions of QOL. However, due to the wide range of CAM, different types of CAM and their effects should be considered in future studies.
