Perceived stress, stress coping and life satisfaction in women with breast cancer

Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) diagnosis and its treatment are stressful events in life. Exploring patients’ stress and their needs are crucial for developing appropriate intervention. Purpose: This study aimed to identify perceived stress, stress coping and life satisfaction in women with BC. Method: ۳۷۲ women with BC who met inclusion criteria included to the study and completed questionnaires. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in Cancer Institute of Imam Khomeini complex hospital. The study instruments included demographic and characteristics of disease, perceived stress (PSS-۱۴), stress coping (CISS-۲۱) and life satisfaction (SWLS) questionnaires. The collected data were entered into SPSS software (V.۱۸) and analyzed using descriptive statistical tests. Results: Participants reported perceived stress (M = ۳۰.۱۰; SD = ۸.۷۱) and the highest scores in perceived helpless (M = ۱۷.۶۰; SD = ۴.۷۶) compared to perceived self-efficacy (M = ۱۲.۵; SD = ۴.۸۱). Most reported used emotion-oriented (M = ۱۲.۵; SD = ۴.۸۱) and life satisfaction scores (M = ۱۳.۸۶; SD = ۴.۱۱). Conclusion: Based on the finding, it is important to provide multi- domain interventions for females with BC to reduce perceived stress, increase self-efficacy, life satisfaction and use task-oriented stress coping instead of other ways.
