PAUL AUSTER’S CITY OF GLASS: THE WORDLESS WORLD OF SELF AND SUBJECTIVITY

Through a careful analysis of different elements, City of Glass novel subvertsand borrows from the classical whodunit; it more generally explores the functionand the place of the self and subject in postmodern fiction. City of Glass standsfor an amalgamation of multiplicities at different levels. The embodiment ofpluralities can be better observed in the represented subject, which is the maincharacter of the novel. Due to the fact that some characters share commonexperiences, occupations, ideas, and even names, they can be considered echoes,images, or representations of one body, Quinn ́s body. Such echoes might beeither possibilities of his existence, or actual time-related stages of his own life.From that appreciation, Quinn can be considered a multiple subject himself.
