Safavid Fractals: Application of Muqarnas Technique in Aali Qapu Palace Music Hall

Muqarnas is globally recognized as one of the most important and fascinating elements of Iranian architecture. Numerous research had been conducted on the aesthetic and ontological aspects of muqarnas in the history of Iranian architecture, while the function and application of muqarnas geometry and spatial characteristics of this technique remains vague and ambiguous. This study aims to analyze the muqarnas geometry of the Aali Qapu palace music hall with fractal fundamentals. As the result, we conclude that the muqarnas geometry of Aali Qapu case study functions as a complicated acoustic system in order to fulfill the requirements of the music hall characteristics in the Safavid era.
