Efficacy of Domperidone on lactation in low-milk-producing women in a multi-center study in Tehran

Background: Domperidone is a drug used for increasing the breast-milk in women with low breast supply. But contributing efficacy has not been evaluated in Iranian women. Objective: This study was performed to determine the efficacy of Domperidone on lactation in low-milk-producing women .Methods and materials: This interventional study that was performed as a Quasi-Randomized Clinical Trial included ۱۶ consecutive low-milk-producing women attending to Azad University Hospitals in Tehran from ۲۰۱۳ to ۲۰۱۴. They were enrolled in this multi-center study after screening and the serum levels of prolactin and breast-milk volume before and after domperidone administration were determined and compared.Results: In this study the mean breast milk volume was ۱۷۳.۷۵ ± ۴۷.۷۳ and ۳۲۶.۸۸ ± ۲۶.۱۹ ml, before and after intervention respectively with statistically significant difference (P=۰.۰۰۰۱). In addition, the mean serum prolactin level was ۱۶۱.۱۹ ± ۱۹.۱۳ and ۲۵۴.۰ ± ۲۵.۵۳, before and after intervention respectively, that showed significant difference (P=۰.۰۰۰۱).Conclusions: Totally it may be concluded that domperidone would result in breast milk increase among mothers with low supply of milk .There was no noticeable side effect as well and is recommended for low milk-supply women.
