چکیده مقاله:

The current study attempted to explore the generic patterns of the research article abstracts in one of the sub-disciplines of applied linguistics, that is Sociolinguistics. To this end, ۴۰ research article abstracts were collected from the archive of the refereed journals and their constituent moves were identified based on Hylandʼs (۲۰۰۰) five-move model (introduction, purpose, method, product, conclusion). The results revealed that the most frequent moves in the abstracts were purpose, method, and product moves. The other two moves, introduction and conclusion, were less frequently used by the authors. It was also demonstrated that only ۲۰ percent of the abstracts followed the conventional pattern while the rest of the abstracts had various generic patterns. The results can be used to raise the awareness of the academic English writing material developers and instructors in order to implement genre-based instructional approaches in the materials and syllabi to enable the novice researchers approach the norms of their scientific communities.
