Active degradable films were prepared by adding ۱% nanochitosan (NC), and ۱- ۱.۵% Ziziphora clinopodioides essential oil (ZCEO) into polylactic acid (PLA) films prepared bysolvent casting. Functional characterizations of these bio-films were carried out by evaluating some of their physical properties, including moisture content (۱۴.۰۲%), solubility (۱۷.۴۱%), water vapor permeability (۱.۱۴ × ۱۰−۷ g s−۱ m−۱ Pa−۱), and oxygen transmission rate (۲۱.۵۴ cm۳.mm/ m۲.۲۴ hrs.) showed that adding ۱% ZCEO improved the film physical characteristics. However, by adding ۱.۵% concentration EO to the PLA film, the values of water vapor permeability, and turbidity did not display a promising outcomes. In addition, the agar diffusion method was used for the evaluation of the films antimicrobial effectiveness against Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli; Our findings showed that the PLA films containing ZCEO represented proper inhibitory effects on both tested bacteria. In most cases, adding NC, affected the mentioned characteristics positively. Thus, based on economics and the better antimicrobial and physical properties of PLA+ ۱% NC+۱.۵% ZCEO, the film can be applied as an active packaging in food products.
