چکیده مقاله:
Background: Virgin coconut oil (VCO) is one of the most commonly used forms of coconut. It is readily available and widely used in traditional medicine. For decades, it is considered for its antimicrobial activity. Method: We searched in databases to look for suitable papers in line with our research aim. After the search of databases, ۱۵ papers choose to be appropriate for our short communication article.Findings: results stand out the medium-chain fatty acids and lauric acid as the main content of VCO, which have a crucial role in the therapeutic effects. Lauric acid and its main metabolite, monolaurin, has demonstrated antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal activities. Notably, the VCO acts as an antiviral compound by activating three mechanisms against lipid-coated viruses like SARS-Cov-۲ in the case of antiviral activity. The disintegration of the virus envelope, inhabitation of maturation, and prevention of binding the virus to host cell membranes are three mechanisms. Likewise, it is highlighted that VCO makes energy by producing ketone bodies by transporting to the liver via the portal vein. Further, it can be considered a preventive treatment in COVID-۱۹ complications by protecting its effect on pulmonary systems and eliminating pro-inflammatory factors. Moreover, the potential action of VCO in increasing HDL and lowering LDL plays a protective role in the cardiovascular system. Conclusion: We summarized VCO's potential therapeutic effects against COVID-۱۹ and its complications to pave the way for designing new drugs or treatment plans for this disease.
