The issue of water consumption in the world has been raised as a vital issue in recent decades. The scarcity of water resources and the development of industries have caused human beings to optimize water consumption as well as recover used water. Due to high energy consumption and low efficiency, the use of membrane technology is one of applicant methods for fresh water production. Among the methods of desalination and water production, the reverse osmosis membrane method invented in recent decades has quickly found its place in industry. So in this paper, review studies have been done on different types of polymeric materials for making reverse osmosis membranes. Also, the properties and performance of these membranes have been summarized. The results showed that polyamide is the best polymer in the construction of the separating layer. Thin film composite membranes are also used as the best industrial membranes in the reverse osmosis industry currently in the world.
