Comparison of active and passive LED drivers

LEDs have a promising prospect becauseof its advantages. Based on the electrical characteristicsof LEDs, a constant current driver is needed to supportthe LED working performance. With the wideapplications of LEDs, many new technologies arepresented. This paper gives a brief overview on thedifferences between active and passive drivers. A sampleof each type is also simulated and the simulation resultsare reviewed. A sample LED driver made with ICTL۴۹۴ and tested using an AC voltage source illuminatesthe LEDs. All simulations are performed in MATLABand Proteus ۸ software.
