Scrutiny of Clay Swelling Phenomena in Hydrocarbon Reservoirs

Mostly a phenomenon that is considered in the drilling operation is clay swelling. This phenomenon has a serious impact on many operations during drilling or completion of a well like a cementing quality and may lead to significantly increased oil well construction costs. An important area attracting a huge amount of fondness from both industry and university. This study presented a review of clay swelling phenomena, their mechanisms and described the types of clay minerals and their characteristics. Also demonstrated engineering properties of clay minerals, classification, and influencing by clay minerals. Also, different chemical analyses and typical characteristics of the clays will be presented.
