This paper discusses brittle fracture and fatigue failure modes for the design of structures in seismic environment. The possibility of brittle fracture should be considered in structures with high-strength thick welded plates and/or structures under high loading magnitude due to severe ground motion. Low cycle fatigue failure mode is also relevant due to high amplitude repetitive loading during severe ground motion. The controlling parameters and general design procedures for these failure modes are briefly discussed by using the concepts of fracture mechanics and strain-life or low-cycle fatigue approach
