ASEISMICITY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING STRUCTURES IN JAPAN

Research works of earthquake engineering in Japan started one hundred years ago, just after Nohbi Earthquake, ۱۸۹۱. Brief history of earthquake engineering will be described chronologically. Secondly lessons obtained through many past severe earthquakes attached our country. Lastly the writer will mention the current issues of his works, which are liquefaction and large ground displacement induced by liquefaction, landslides caused by earthquake, damping characteristics of bolted structures, diagnosis of existing bridges, and aseismic base-isolation. In the concluding remarks, international cooperation in the field of earthquake engineering will be emphasized.
