It is usually the case that stiffness of soil supporting a structure is expressed, in many analytical methods, by a complex function in the frequency domainso that the effect of dissipation of wave into the unbounded soil can be taken into account rationally. This, however, makes it difficult to evaluate non-linear soil-structure interaction in practice. A simple approach for this purpose is developed. In our method, the soil stiffness is expressed by a generalized Voigt model, which is a synthesis of frequency-independent springs and dashpots. These constants are so determined as to simulate the effect of wave radiation in various shapes including spherical, cylindrical and plane ones, and it is possible to calculate non-linear response of a soil-structure system by the conventional technique.
