Shanxi Wanjiazhai Yellow River Diversion Project, Lot I

The project is located in the Province Shanxi that is the northern region of the People’s Republic of China and was awarded to MAS Joint Venture in November1997. The Lot I part of the entire project consists of two underground pumping stations interconnected with the Yellow River and other parts of diversion system through tunnels. The geology is mainly Limestone, Dolomite and Sandstone. Karst cavities were rare and the construction technology was drill-and-blast with primary support performed by shotcrete, anchors and wire meshes. The inner lining has been constructed in reinforced concrete for all underground openings. The entire time schedule was foreseen as 43 months and the project was successfully completed in May 2001. The entire SWYRD project is one of the largest underground structures constructed in the world ever.
