IDENTIFYING TRANSLATORS BY THEIR WORD EQUIVALENT SELECTION IN TWO TRANSLATIONS OF FUNNY IN FARSI

Authorship attribution has attracted the attention of many scholars for many years and is still a sought-after topic, especially in forensic linguistics and computational linguistics. As more and more questions about the translator's styles and the traces left by the translator have emerged in recent years, detecting translator's fingerprints in a text has become increasingly popular among researchers. The aim of this study was to find a way to detect translators' fingerprints by analyzing their equivalence decisions. The material used in this study consists of an English memoir entitled “Funny” in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas, which was a bestseller, and two of its translations. The first translation of “Funny” in Farsi is called "Atr e Sonbol Atr e Kaaj", translated by Mohammad Soleymani Nia, and the second translation is called "Ba Mazzeh Dar Farsi", translated by Gholamreza Emami. A total of ۳۰۰ polysemous words were extracted and analyzed to find out whether or not it was possible to recognize translators based on the chosen equivalents alone. In ۷۱ cases, the equivalents were not influenced by context, and translators had the freedom to choose between possible equivalents to personalize their translation based on their stylistic preferences. The results indicated that translators used equivalents that were unique to themselves and were not used by other translators _ that is, they used one or more equivalents frequently, and omission rate was the way translators left some traces. The results of this study indicate that verbs have been the most common words that give translators enough freedom to use their own version of equivalents.
