silicone surfactants as antifoam compounds in detergents

Silicon -based antifoam compounds for use in detergents are composed of two major components: silicone fluid and hydrophobic silica the fluid polymer acts as a carrier to deliver the silica particles to the foam air -water intrerface , where film rupture then occurs silicone compound is a translucent liquid which can be hard to place into powder detergents silicone antifoam compounds are made be hydrophobizing silica in silicone fluid. silanols are reactive silicone compounds which when reacted with silica give very effective antifoam compounds. silanol compounds have also been used in softergent applications in many cases giving better more durble softening than silicone fluids.
