Plan for Restoration and a Policy for Rehabilitation of the Sabzevar Caravansary In Iran

Building restoration is the action or process of accurately revealing, recovering or representing the state of a historic building, as it appeared at a particular period in its history, while protecting its heritage value. Inspired by Maslow’s hierarchy of needs model, in this study, we attempted to conduct a project for restoration and rehabilitation of the Sabzevar caravansary as an historical monument located in Sabzevar city of Razavi Khorasan Province in Iran. For restoration, we provided restoration plans based on its basic plan. For rehabilitation, after preparing a list of possible building-usage policies according to various decision-making factors, we analyzed them according to the book Architects’ Data by Neufert & Neufert (۱۷۹۱) in terms of floor requirements, design and spatial dimensions. In this regard, we suggested that establishing a “center for the sale of spices and medicinal herbs” and a “natural history museum” inside the caravansary can have significant effect on its rehabilitation.
