In this study, the effect of the turbine spacing on the performance of a pair of vertical axis wind turbines was investigated through ۳D computational fluid dynamics simulations. The numerical simulations were validated against the experimental data for a single wind turbine, and then two wind turbines were simulated. The wind turbines were placed in a staggered orientation and the angle between the line connecting centers of the wind turbines and the wind direction was ۴۵°. The wind turbines were placed at ۱.۵, ۲, and ۲.۵ turbine diameters from each other. In order to investigate the effect of the distance other parameters were the same in all simulations. Analyzing the results of the simulations showed that the best performance of the wind turbines was obtained at the distance of ۱.۵ turbine diameters with a ۳۴.۵۷% increase in the average coefficient of power compared to a single wind turbine. This enhancement was due to the flow acceleration between the two turbines when they were in close proximity.
