Recycling of mixed plastic wastes containing PVC

PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is one of the most consumed plastic materials worldwide and yet one of the most difficult ones to recycle. It is possible to put the recycling methods for PVC plastics into two main categories: mechanical methods and chemical methods. Since there are some fully developed technologies to recycle the sorted plastic wastes or waste streams with higher qualities, recycling solutions for mixed plastic wastes (which tends to show lower quality for recycling) require particular attention. Mixed plastic wastes contain different plastic types with different recycling potential which pose a recycling challenge. The objective of this paper is to review the studies that provide innovative methods for recycling PVC mixed plastic wastes that published within the last ten years. The reviewed methods fall into one of the following main categories: production of a new product/composite, using different solvents to extract the polymers and additives or as a selective separation method, and thermal technologies (pyrolysis, gasification) to obtain different hydrocarbons.
