A brief introduction to the auxetic materials

The Poisson’s ratio is known as one of the most important elastic properties of materials. This property shows that if a material is stretched in one direction, it contracts in the transverse direction to the loading one and if compressed, the material expands in the transverse to the loading direction. There are some materials and structures following different behavior, i.e., they expand in the transverse to loading direction as stretched and shrinks in the transverse to loading direction as compressed. These materials arenamed “Auxetic materials” which means the materials with negative Poisson’s ratio. Although auxetic materials are new, many applications have been found for them. In this study, a short review of these materials and their most important mechanical properties and some of their applications are presented.
