چکیده مقاله:

Background and Objective: Following the advent of nanoparticles, a major shift in drug delivery to the central nervous system has occurred. Drug delivery to blood brain barrier (BBB) is relatively difficult because the human central nervous system is protected by the meninges. Meningitis is one of the disease associated with this system, which is amongst the ten leading causes of infection related mortality. In this systematic review, we tried to review the application of drug nanoparticles in the treatment of meningitis.Search Method: In this review, we used three databases including: PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar, and we reviewed and analyzed articles related to nanoparticles, blood-brain barrier(BBB), meningeal infections, meningitis, targeted drug delivery, and the reviewed data were published during ۲۰۱۵ to now.Findings: Meningitis as an infectious and inflammatory disease is extremely dangerous. Despite the use of antibiotics, this disease has not been successfully treated due to insufficient penetration of drugs into the brain. The presence of a blood-brain barrier around the brain tissue reduces the entry of conventional drugs into the target area. Compared to antibiotics, nanoparticles with longer life and less toxicity are good options for targeted and accurate drug entry into the blood-brain barrier. Based on previous studies, different types of nanoparticles have been used in the treatment of meningitis. The most important nanocarriers for brain drug delivery are polymeric nanoparticles and liposomes. With the entry of nanoparticles into the drug delivery area, one of the major challenges of drug delivery to the brain has been solved. Conclusion: Assessment of researches published in the recent years indicated that nanoparticles have shown considerable enhancement in the permeability of drugs and their targeted delivery to the brain. These results showed that scientists are able to successfully use nanotechnology to overcome the challenges in the treatment of central nervous infectious diseases including meningitis.
