Prevalence of type2 diabetes in population over 30 years old in Varamin province (2017-18)

Background and Purpose: Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common metabolic disordersassociated with an absolute or relative deficiency in secretion or function of insulin in the body,and in recent decades, its prevalence has increased among adults around the world. Therefore,the present study was designed to evaluate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the populationolder than 30 years old in Varamin city in years 2017-18.Method: In this descriptive-analytical study, data were collected from 1102 diabetic patientswho had referred to the Diabetes Patient Support Center of Varamin city during years 2017 and2018. Questionnaire was used to collect data including variables such as gender, age, fastingblood sugar, cholesterol, HbA1c, triglyceride, systolic and diastolic blood pressure and pulsepressure. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 25 and chi-square test forindependent variables and qualitative t-test.Findings: In this study, the overall prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the population over 30years old in Varamin city , in Years 2017-18 , 11 and 12 percent, respectively ,and theprevalence of men in years 2017 and 2018, respectively, at 8 and 9 percent, respectively , andin women it was 13 and 14 percent. Mean and standard deviation of age of 1102 members was56/29±13/11. 67/8% were women. Mean and standard deviation of fasting blood glucose(207/74±93/50 mg/dl), HbA1c (8/93±2/58%), Cholesterol (186/29±56/83), Triglyceride(173/89±92/94mg/dl), systolic blood pressure (126/12±17/57mmHg), diastolic blood pressure(79/37±7/28mmHg) and pulse pressure (46/74±13/98mmHg). Also in the study of differencesin fasting blood sugar was (p=0/933) ,HbA1c (p=0/571), Cholesterol (p=0/192) there was nosignificant difference in diastolic blood pressure (p=0/317) between the two groups. But therewas a statistically significant difference between the two groups of men and women in thestudy of systolic blood pressure (p=0/000) and pulse pressure (p=0/001) so that the mean ofsystolic blood pressure and pulse pressure were higher in women than in men.Discussion & Conclusion: According to the results of the present study, the prevalence of type2 diabetes among population older than 30 years old in Varamin city is lower than similarstudies in other centers. Given the prevalence of 12% and an increase over a year in both menand women and not having diabetics go to health centers, screening and remedies for affectedpeople and formulation of a prevention plan for healthy people in Varamin is recommended.
