چکیده مقاله:

Background: Since recognizing the cause of hospitalization and duration of stay inneonatal intensive care unit, it can be important to evaluate the quality of services in thissection, therefore, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence, cause ofhospitalization and duration of stay in neonatal intensive care unit.Material and Methods: In this analytical-cross-sectional study, 456 cases of all neonateshospitalized in NICU Hospital of al-Hadi city of Shoushtar in 1397, were investigated andthe variables of hospitalization, length of stay, birth weight, sex and age of pregnancytermination were extracted and recorded. The obtained data were analyzed using T-test,correlation test, ANOVA test and two-way distribution by SPSS software version 18.Results: Of the 456 hospitalized infants, 271 (61.9%) were boys. 301 people (66%) werehospitalized due to respiratory distress, 120 (26.31%) due to premature birth, 17 people(3.72%) due to meconium aspiration and the rest due to other reasons..The duration ofstay of hospitalized newborns was due to distress (4/29±4/5), preterm birth (8/74±8/7)and meconiom aspiration(2/58±1/22) days and a significant relationship between patients'hospitalization days was observed according to the cause of their hospitalization (P<0/001). The average length of stay of infants in the NICU was 5/39 ± 6/17 days, and nosignificant relationship was found between the length of stay and gender (P> 0.005).Whilethere was a significant and inverse relationship between length of stay with neonatalweight(r= -0/459,p<0.001)and gestational age (r= -0/483, p<0/001).Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate a significant relationship betweeninfant weight, gestational age, and the cause of hospitalization with the number of daysof stay. On the other hand, prevention of premature birth is one of the main reasons forhospitalization of infants by providing the necessary training and care to pregnantmothers.
