The Relationship gestational age and birth weight with the length of hospitalization of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit

Background: Given the role that gestational age and birth weight can play in infant health, this study was conducted to investigate the relationship between gestational ageand birth weight with infant length of stay in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Method: In this analytical cross-sectional study, after leaving out the incomplete files,461 cases related to neonates admitted to the NICU of Alhadi Hospital in Shoushtar city in 1397 were examined and three variables of birth weight, gestational age, and length of hospitalization were extracted and recorded from each file. The existence of any three relevant variables in the file was the entry criterion and Absence the variables was the criterion for removing the files from our study. Data were analyzed using Statistical tests ANOVA and correlation and SPSS.16 software.Finding: Birth weight, gestational age, and Length of stay infants were obtained as 2757/18±874/34 gram, 35/7±3/14 week and 5/39±6/17 days, respectively, and between Length of stay with birth weight (r=-0.450,p>0/001) and gestational age (r=- 0.485,p>0/001) There was a significant and inverse relationship, and the relationship between birth weight and gestational age were significant and direct (r=0.664,p<0/001). Conclusion: Considering that there is a significant relationship between gestational age and birth weight with duration of hospitalization in neonatal intensive care unit, providing appropriate training and services to mothers during pregnancy to prevent preterm delivery and birth of newborns with poor physical conditions can be useful.
