The role of occupational therapy in mental health and well-being in elderly people; a systematic review

Background: Iran’s elderly population grew by 3.62 percent in 1398 to 8 milion and 231000 or 9.9 percent of the total population. These people experience many problems such as limitation of ADL, IADL and mental health.One of the treatment to improve the mental health and quality of life (qol) is occupational therapy (ot) and the purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of ot on mental health and qol in elderly people Method: In this study, a systematic review of the databases google scholar, PubMed with thekeywords occupational therapy, mental health and the elderly Search is done. In this process, studies that examined the role of occupational therapy on mental health and qol in elderly people were included in the study and finally choose 4 most suitable article for this study. Finding: Inclusion criteria were full text availability, interventional study, and non-review articles. There was a significant difference between the articles in terms of the indices studied, sample number, method of implementation, and so on. Review of studies have shown that Occupational therapy interventions in the elderly help improve the quality of life in the areas of ADL, IADL, Social Participation and Leisure.As a result, it helps to improve self-esteem and prevent mental problems such as depression,anxiety and etc in the elderly population Conclusion: This study emphasizes on using occupational therapy in elderly people to enhance well being and improve mental health problems in these people.
