چکیده مقاله:

Background: Malnutrition is often seen at the point of diagnosis in childhood malignancy or may develop during the course of treatment. At the time of cancer diagnosis, malnutrition is found in 8% of children. To prevent malnutrition and its complications during cancer treatment, early identification is essential and nutrition screening may offer a simple alternative to nutrition assessment for identifying children with cancer who are at risk of malnutrition. The present paper aimed to evaluate the nutrition assessment and screening tools for childhood cancer.Method: A review of the data available on this topic has been carried out that searched the following databases for the initial review: SID, Google Scholar, Pubmed, CINAHL, Science direct. Results and Conclusions: Detailed nutrition assessment can be time consuming, expensive and complete on all children with cancer in often resource poor setting, and amongst the multitude of testing undertaken on patient, nutrition assessment is often over looked. Common methods are used for nutrition assessment between different studies such as weight, height, BMI, Free-Fat-Mass(FFM), Anthropometry, triceps skin fold thickness, dietary intake, but they not reliable methods because can be influenced by different factors. Eventually, numerouse screening tools have been developed for this population. But none of the dieticians and nurses used them because they had been developed for adults and not adapted for paediatric use. SCAN is a simple, quick and valid tool which can be used to identify children with cancer who are at risk of malnutrition. Therefore, designing standard nutrition screening tools for children and educating them to nurses and dieticians in pediatric cancer centers could be improve this problem.
