Operations Management: Research/Practice Gap

Following the evolution and growth of the field of production and operations management, a number of studies have recently appeared which provide insights on the ranking of the research outlets of the field. This paper presents a brief history of the development of operations management (OM).This provides the backdrop for a content analysis of journal articles published in the Journal of Operations Management and the International Journal of Operations & Production Management between Januarys 1997and December 2005. MBA student survey data are then used to explore any gaps that may exist between the focus of academic research and the perceived importance of given OM subject areas to practitioners. The practical and conceptual insights highlighted are then used as the basis for a discussion of extant research priorities. By considering the three following intervals, (i.e. 1997-1999; 2000-2003; 2004-2006), possible trends in OM are discussed. Supply chain, performance measurement, quality, and process technology are the ones discussed.
