In 2013, ARPA_E spent $ 9.1 million on research into a new type of laser drilling. The research involves drilling with various types of industrial lasers in small tools and trying to improve them for drilling oil tanks. The long-term results are that each drill costs $ 35,000,000, but with research, the cost would be $ 35,000. It is costly to use a laser drill. But now, because this type of drilling is not fully operational, the cost is $ 4,500,000 for each drill, due to the lack of bulk technology.Laser drilling is a widely-used manufacturing process especially in high value manufacturing product components such as jet engine and gas turbine. Manufacturing process efficiency and quality as well as operation cost are very important factors for companies to survive in the competitive environment. To create good quality product with minimum cost, optimum process parameters selection is necessary as well as comprehending the process. In this paper, technical challenges of the laser drilling manufacturing processes integrated with the product quality and process parameters has been discussed. This study also reveals some future research direction in the area of laser drilling.
