چکیده مقاله:

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a prevalent neuro-inflammatory disease arising from the interplay of multiple genetic and nongenetic factors. The complex etiology of MS highlights the importance of study in various populations exposed to different genetic and environmental risk factors. Neurotrophins are polypeptide growth factors that can be constructed and secreted within the immune system. The role of BDNF and GDNF in immune response has been proposed by various investigations. We aimed to elucidate the changes in BDNF and GDNF genes expression in MS patients in comparison with controls. In this study, the association of the expression levels of BDNF and GDNF genes was evaluated in 25 relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients and 25 controls in peripheral blood samples by reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). The expression of BDNF and GDNF were found to be significantly increased in RRMS patients compared with controls (P-value<0.0001 and P-value<0.0012, respectively). The findings indicated association between BDNF and GDNF expression and MS, at least in the Iranian population studied. These results provide additional evidence that the relationship between neurotrophins family and MS disease.
