Adsorption of DMSO from aqueous solution using modified Beta zeolite

In this research, modified beta zeolite adsorbent was synthesized by the hydrothermal method and the characterization of the synthesized product was investigated by XRD and SEM techniques. Adsorption experiments were performed on a batch scale based on a time-invariant model in a discontinuous environment. The influence of effective factors including adsorbent amount, the initial concentration of DMSO, pH and contact time were investigated. Maximum DMSO removal occurred at contact time of 60min, pH= 6, DMSO concentration of 500 mg.L-1 and of 0.35g adsorbent. The obtained results of adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption isotherm of the absorbent towards DMSO was in well agreement with the Langmuir (R2= 0.986) model and the kinetics of adsorption was better explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic (R2= 0.999) model.Thermodynamic parameters including standard entropy (ΔSº), standard enthalpy (Δ Hº) and standard gibbs free energy (ΔGº) demonstrated the DMSO removal by modified beta zeolite was spontaneous and exothermic in the range of 298.15–318.15 K temperature. The most adsorption capacity of the beta zeolite for DMSO was detected to 1306.66 mg/g at 25°C. The obtained results demonstrated that the modified beta zeolite can be effective material for DMSO removal from industrial effluent.
