The influence of Boron on Properties of Al–15%Mg2Si in situ composite

The influence of Boron (B) modification on the microstructure and hardness of an Al–15%Mg2Si composite casted in a low-section mould was studied. The microstructural study of the composite showed both primary and secondary Mg2Si phases in all specimens, and Borides were visible at high B contents. The results demonstrated that the addition of B reduced the average size of primary Mg2Si particles and increased the amount of alpha phase. It was revealed from hardness tests that the addition of B decreases the hardness values.
