Analyzing of Engineering Projects in Iranian Engineering Consultancy Firms

The Iranian's construction industry has taken great leaps in the last two decades not only in the area of construction, but also in the field of design and engineering. The engineering practices include a broad range of designs from single structures like high-rise buildings, dams, bridges, subways, or roads to the more complex facilities such as oil and gas refineries and sophisticated petrochemical or other kinds of industrial plants. In recent years we have witnessed a growing number of engineering firms, many of them run privately and some of them are state-run companies. There are also a few general contractors who carrying out both engineering and construction tasks. However, despite these remarkable advances, there are serious pitfalls in the way these firms deal with engineering tasks in the larger construction projects. Indeed many engineering projects in Iran, especially the complex ones fail to meet the project's objectives in terms of required planned time, budget, scope, and quality. Owing to the importance of engineering phase in the project success, and its immense effect on the other parts of the projects, a limited survey is being considered to run on a few major Iranian engineering firms to identify some of the crucial managerial weaknesses in engineering project. In this regard, the raw data with the experimental information will be gathered through questionnaires and interviews with very knowledgeable persons engaged in projects. This paper is the report of this study, which shows the results of survey's analysis. Then some recommendations to improve the engineering projects performance will be included in this paper.
