Quality of life in patients with electrical injuries

Background and Aim : Electrical injuries have many physical and psychological sequels in survivors and affect their quality of life. This study aimed to determine the quality of life in patients following electrical burn. Methods : This is an analytical-descriptive study of patients admitted to Hazrat Fatemeh hospital for reconstructive surjury following electrocution in 2014-2019. Data were collected using the specific questionnaire to assess the quality of life (including mental, physical & social domains) in burn patients (BSHS-B) and a demographic form. To fill the questionnaire, all patients were reviewed by means of call. Information were extracted and analyzed by SPSS version 20. Results : Fifty six patients answered the questions in this study. The mean age of the participates was (36.68±14.14) years and most of them were male (%94.6). Significant percent of patients were construction workers (%30.4) and electricians (%17.9). Fifty eight amputations occurred that majority of them were in right upper limb (%64.2). The results indicated that social score (4.31±0.99) and mental score (4.64±1.00) were the worst and the best domain of quality of life, respectively. Only 3 (%5.35) of the 56 patients returned to the same work duties and 53 (%94.65) did not. Conclusion : Regarding to the results, the electrical burn patients may have an overall poor quality of life, especially in social and physical domains and a limited ability to return to work. Further studies are focused to improve social activities and get the suitable job.
