Investigation of relation between physical activity and cognitive disorder in elderly people of Amirkol, northern Iran

Background and Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical activity on cognitive impairments in the elderly. Given that the elderly population is increasing around the world, including Iran and cognitive impairments are one of the most common disease in the aging period of life that many social and economic burden imposed on society and due to the fact that few studies have been conducted in this field in our region, this study was conducted in elderly Amirkola.Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional analytic study on1390 people aged 60 years and older was conducted Amirkola in 2015-2016. Mini-Mental Estate Examination) was used to measure cognitive impairment, PASE (The Physical Activity Scale for Elderly) test was used to assess physical activity levels. Information collected after arriving in spss statistical software and using paired t-test and chi-square were analyzed. Findings: Of 1390 elderly, 763 patients were male (%54.9). And 627 of them women (%45.1). MMSE test in 969 cases (%69.7) normal and 421 patients (% 30.3) abnormal and in terms of physical activity, the benchmark score of 150, in 305 patients (%21.9) ≥150 points and 1085 cases (%78.1) Score <150 had been. The study also showed that people who had lower MMSE score was less physical activity and a significant positive correlation was observed between physical activity and MMSE. R=0/117, P<0/001)), this correlation was seen as more significant in women than men (R=0/271, P<0/001).Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the incidence of cognitive impairment in people who have more physical activity, is less, this correlation is more obvious in women.
