چکیده

One of the most recognized geotechnical hazard which causes damages to different structures,are the collapsible soils under the foundation of structures. This problem becomes more critical when water is speeded or induced to them. Water conveyance canals are known as linear projects and probability of leakage is almost possible. Canals which constructed over collapsible soils are always subjects to hard hazard and damages. Khoda Afarin main canal is major conveyance canal which is located and under construction in Moghan region passes throw both East Azarbijan and Ardabil provinces in IRAN. Presence of collapsible soils in some portions of this canal bed, has brought the necessity of study and treatment of this problem. The paper takes a brief view to the nature and characteristics of the collapsible soils and methods for their recognition and improvement of hazardous zones. In this paper complete attention is paid for the applicability of different method for this project. One of the most practicable methods which was studied, and applied to this project is the pre-pounding of canal. The behavior of Khoda Afarin canal in the zones with collapsible soils during and after pre-pounding was studies and the results are presented.
