The effects of salt stress on Momordica charantia in the presence of jasmonic acid

چکیده

Stress is defined as changes in natural and optimal physiological condition, which cause undesirable effects on growth, development and yield of plants. Salt stress is one of the most important limiting factors of plant growth. Jasmonic acid is derived from linoleic acid, which considered as a signal molecule in response to environmental stress and developmental processes. Momordica charantia, known as bitter melon, is from cucurbitaceae family, which is useful in diabetes. In the present work, interaction of salt stress and jasmonic acid and its effects on physiological parameters was studied. Plants were exposed to different salt (0, 25, 50, 100, 150, 300 mM NaCl) and jasmonic acid (0, 0.05, 0.15, 0.5, 1 μM) concentrations. The results showed that high concentration of salt cause decreased growth parameters, protein, pigments and soluble sugar contents. However, interaction between salinity and jasmonic acid increased fresh and dry weight of shoot and root, protein, carbohydrates and pigments content. Therefore, jasmonic acid treatments may ameliorate hazardous effects of salt stress in Momordica charantia
