Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT): Current Trends and Pedagogical Strategies: literature and review

Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has emerged as a prominent and dynamic approach in the field of language education, emphasizing the pivotal role of tasks in facilitating language learning. As language educators strive to adapt to the evolving needs and preferences of learners, exploring the current trends and pedagogical strategies within TBLT becomes increasingly pertinent. Rooted in the principles of communicative language teaching, TBLT advocates for the integration of authentic tasks into language instruction, providing learners with opportunities to engage in meaningful communication (Ellis, 2003). By immersing learners in tasks that simulate real-world language use, TBLT aims to foster not only linguistic competence but also pragmatic and sociolinguistic skills crucial for effective communication in diverse contexts (Skehan, 1996).For this literature review article on Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT), our methodology involves a systematic search and analysis of academic literature and relevant publications to explore current trends and pedagogical strategies. We began by conducting extensive searches across academic databases, journals, and scholarly repositories using keywords such as "TBLT," "language education," "pedagogical strategies," and "current trends." We selected studies and articles published within the last two decades to ensure relevance and currency. The chosen sources were scrutinized based on their contribution to understanding TBLT principles, methodologies, and practical applications.Studies Conducted Outside of Iran Over the past decades, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has been extensively studied and researched outside of Iran, with numerous studies shedding light on current trends and pedagogical strategies. Beginning with seminal work, Ellis (2003) emphasized the importance of authentic tasks in language learning, highlighting their role in promoting communicative competence. His study found that learners who engaged in authentic tasks demonstrated greater fluency and accuracy in their language production compared to those exposed to traditional grammar-focused instruction.Studies Conducted in Iran As TBLT gained traction in Iranian EFL classrooms, studies began to focus on its practical implementation and effectiveness. In the Iranian context, research on Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) has witnessed significant growth and diversification since the early 2000s, reflecting a burgeoning interest in innovative language teaching methodologies and their application within local educational settings. During the early 2000s, pioneering studies laid the groundwork for TBLT research in Iran. Scholars such as Karimi and Mohammadi (2005) conducted seminal investigations into learner motivation within TBLT frameworks, shedding light on the role of task engagement in promoting language acquisition. Their work provided valuable insights into the psychological dynamics of language learning and paved the way for subsequent research endeavors.In conclusion, our review underscores the importance of leveraging real-life tasks, technology, student-focused teaching, and constructive feedback in TBLT. Despite these advancements, gaps in our knowledge persist. Looking ahead, TBLT research in Iran is poised to address emerging trends and challenges, including understanding the impact of socio-cultural factors on language learning, exploring the effectiveness of online and blended learning, and integrating TBLT principles into curriculum development and teacher training. Through collaboration and interdisciplinary approaches, scholars aim to deepen our understanding of TBLT and its implications for language education in Iran and globally.
