Abstract
Purpose: This study systematically synthesizes research at the intersection of blockchain architecture, consumer trust, and cryptocurrency adoption in e‑commerce, addressing persistent theoretical fragmentation between traditional e‑commerce trust models and blockchain‑based payment systems.
Design/methodology/approach: Using PRISMA 2020 protocols, a hybrid systematic literature review and bibliometric mapping were conducted across major databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost, Google Scholar) for 2020–2026, complemented by backward/forward snowballing and the inclusion of seminal pre‑2020 works.
Findings: Blockchain’s core properties—decentralization, transparency, immutability, and cryptographic security—mitigate traditional e‑commerce vulnerabilities, shifting the locus of trust from centralized intermediaries to technical systems and processes, and strengthening consumer trust when privacy ownership and metadata transparency are emphasized. Yet, cryptocurrency use in retail remains limited, constrained by asset volatility, UX complexity, regulatory fragmentation, low financial literacy, and weak consumer demand despite strong theoretical advantages.
Originality/value: The review integrates bibliometric and thematic evidence to propose a unified conceptual framework that links multi‑dimensional e‑commerce trust constructs with crypto‑payment adoption drivers, clarifies the “trustless” paradox, and outlines a multi‑level future research agenda on technical, behavioral, and regulatory fronts.
