A Study of Persian Learners of English Difficulties in Specifying the Name and the Sounds of English Language Alphabet by Attending to Their English Language Knowledge in both Spelling and Pronunciation Skills

This study was the examination of Persian learners of English difficulties in specifying the name and the sounds of English alphabetic letters by attending to their English language knowledge which they have gotten through out the years of instruction. The aim of this study was to show in which skill, pronunciation or spelling, Persian learners of English have difficulties in distinguishing the name and the sounds of English alphabetic letters. So, for doing this study because of the large number of English alphabetic letters and their produced sounds, vowels and consonants, this study focused on consonant sounds in series of English alphabetic letters to explore Persian learners of English difficulties in specifying the name and the sounds of English alphabetic letters. Therefore, in order to reach the aim of this study, a quantitative research was done on 55 female high school students who were homogenized after administrating a Cambridge placement test. This research located in Farhang high school in Kerman province. For collecting data, both spelling and pronunciation tests with the same sentences of English compound alphabetic words, which chosen from participants English school book, were taken from participants. Participants' tests were scored from 20 to 0. Then, the get scores classified to A, B, C, and D in order to facilitate the statistical analysis of the marks of participants in both pronunciation and spelling tests. After doing these processes, data analysis was done on get results. And at last, statistical analysis, t test, was done on the results of both spelling and pronunciation tests. Therefore, the results showed that Persian learners of English have difficulties in specifying the name of English alphabetic letters when they were asked to spell the produced sounds of the English alphabetic letters in spoken form. So, the recent study showed that Persian learners of English have problem in spelling than pronunciation.
