Relationship between Low Back Pain, Disability and Quality of Life among female nurses

Background: Low back pain is a world health problem and a major cause of work-related disabilities among nurses. Therefore, this study aimed to measure the prevalence of back pain and the correlation with disability and quality of life in female nurses working at the hospitals affiliated Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among nurses (24-56 years) randomly selected. Data collection instruments were Demographic questionnaire, Visual Analog Scale for Pain (VAS), the Quebec Back Pain Disability Scale and, Short Form Health Survey (SF-36). A Shapiro-Wilk test with skewness-kurtosis was used to test data normality. Data analysed using descriptive and Spearman correlation tests with SPSS 23.Results: A total of 362 nurses (mean age 36.33 - 7.25 and, mean work experience 11.73 - 6.58) participated. The survey showed that 329 (90.9%) of the participants suffered from low back care. There was correlation between pain and age (p<0.001, r=0.188), BMI (p=0.019, r=.124), work experience (p<0.001, r=0.208). Likewise, the results indicated a correlation between pain with disability and dimensions of quality of life.Conclusion: The results of this study showed a considerable prevalence of LBP and the effect on ability and quality of life among nurses in Mazandaran.Message for policymakers: Despite the high prevalence of LBP in nurses, it is necessary to pay more attention to different types of chronic pain by planners and policymakers. As well, it is important policymakers develop and accomplish appropriate strategies for promoting the health of nurses.
