چکیده

Background and Aim: The promotion of clinical nursing education requires using modern educational methods to develop students knowledge and skills. However, this study aimed to compare and investigate the effect of new peer education method and traditional mentorship method on learning of surgical dressing and wound care skills among nursing students. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study. Using census method, 102 nursing students (first and second year) were selected as sample from Ilam University of Medical Sciences; the subjects were assigned to three peer, mentor, and control groups. The surgical dressing performance of each group was evaluated using surgical dressing skills checklist before and after the intervention. Using SPSS software, finally, the collected data were analyzed by t-test and covariance analysis. Results: Based on findings, after the intervention, the scores of surgical dressing and wound care skills were 31.76 (4.89), 28.24 (4.63), and 29.12 (5.33) in mentor, peer, and traditional groups, respectively. The difference was significant between mentor group and traditional group (P < 0.05); however, there was no significant difference between peer group and traditional group (P> 0.05). Also, the findings showed that the students performed well in surgical dressings and wound care using mentorship and peer methods. Conclusion: Based on findings, it can be said that the peer and mentorship method impacted positively on surgical dressing performance of nursing students. Therefore, it was recommended that the nursing education planners use these educational methods to improve nursing students clinical skills.
