In this study, using ultrasonic method, nanoparticles of a new phosphoramide compound and its cadmium nitrate complex with formula (4-NO2-C6H4NH)P(O)Cl(NH-C5H4N-2) = L (1), Cd(NO3)2(L)(CH3OH) (2) were synthesized and characterized by 31P, 1H, 13C NMR, FT-IR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. The 31P NMR spectra exhibited that compound 1 had a more shielded phosphorus atom while its coordination to the Cd(II) ion caused deshielding of the phosphorus in 2. This was attributed to the electron withdrawing nature of metal atoms from the phosphoryl oxygen atoms coordinated to them. The fluorescence spectra of compounds 1 and 2 illustrated that the (max) of emission for phosphoramide 1 was appeared at 382 nm but it was shifted to longer wavelengths (red shift) in complex 2 (422.5 nm). The two compounds 1 and 2 were utilized as dyes for absorbing light in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and the efficiencies of the cells were obtained equal to 0.42 and 0.54%, respectively. Comparing the conversion efficiencies of the two dyes illustrated that compound 2 with a smaller band gap yielded a greater efficiency.
