چکیده

Introduction and Objectives: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is the major cause of nosocomial and community acquired infections. Burn patients are highly prone to infections because of their immune system suppression. PVL is an important virulence factor in MRSA and the incidence of TSST-1 producing strains is also very alarming. The aim of this study was to survey the prevalence of tst and pvl genes and determine the frequency of MRSA isolates in Shiraz tertiary hospitals.Materials and Methods: This study was conducted from June 2011 to June 2012. A total of 200 strains of S. aureus were collected from two tertiary hospitals in Shiraz, Iran. All samples were identified by laboratory standard techniques and MRSA was detected by using disk diffusion Method. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the tst and pvl genes. Results: Out of 200 isolates, 3% were pvl positive and 24% were harbor of tst gene. Among all of these isolates, 49% were MRSA and also 33% of tst-positive isolates were MSSA. The most common ward related to MRSA isolates was ICU ward with frequency of 35.7%.Conclusion: MRSA is an important cause of nosocomial infections worldwide. Our data indicated that MRSA was with relatively high frequency in Shiraz hospitals, especially ICU wards need immediate medical interventions. The frequency of pvl positive S. aureus in patients with pneumonia and burn was low but the high prevalence of tst gene in studied S. aureus isolates and their circulation in the community can have a potentially alarming effect on general health of community.
