چکیده

Introduction: Different studies have suggested that anthropometric indices could be considered as potential risk factors for breast cancer. However, the results of these studies are inconsistent. Our aim was to find out the relation between anthropometric indices and breast cancer Methodology: This was a cross-sectional study, which was conducted in four major mammographic centers in Isfahan, January 2012 to February 2014. 7,893 participants were included in study. Malignancy, confirmed by National Cancer Registry Database and pathology laboratories.Variables were: relative weight (R.W), Obesity Index (O.I), Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist-Hip Ratio (WHR). Body surface area was calculated. Odds ratio (OR) for every variable was calculated by forward conditional logistic regression while this calculation was adjusted for the above-mentioned variables. Results: Out of 7805 women, 1191 individuals had pathology proven breast cancer. Comparing with the first quartile, ORs for weight, body surface area, and BMI were higher in the second, third, and fourth quartile of these variables, though these differences were not significant. ORs for breast cancer of premenopausal women regarding OI and RW were determined. To elaborate, OR for the breast cancer in women with OI≥ 10.79 vs those having OI < 8.87 was 0.56. The calculated OR for breast cancer in women falling in RW≥ 132.99 vs those who had RW < 119.65 was 0.57. Discussion: To conclude, our study suggests that increase in BMI and weight could be considered as aprotective factor for breast cancer, while central obesity could be considered as a risk factor for breast cancer
