چکیده

Antimicrobial coatings have been developed for a variety of different applications to reduce the proliferation of bacteria, fungi, and viruses on surfaces. Growing resistance of microorganisms to antibiotics has renewed a great interest towards investigating methods to improve antibacterial properties of nanoparticles. Antimicrobial coated surfaces can potentially reduce these troublesome infections. The goal of this project is to create an antimicrobial coating using nanoparticle titanium dioxide to be applied to textile samples. A titanium dioxide coating will be characterized and observed for antimicrobial activity. Titanium dioxide (titania) was chosen as the base for this coating because of its photocatalytic activity. The photocatalytic activity of titania nanoparticles is useful for antimicrobial applications and is currently being investigated for its ability to inhibit the growth of microorganisms. Nitrogen enhances the photocatalytic behavior of semiconductors by narrowing its band gap. The aims of present work include the synthesizing and investigating the antibacterial properties of N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles. Disk diffusion method was performed to assess the antibacterial activity of cotton fabrics coated with N-doped TiO2 nanoparticles against gram negative Escherichia coli bacteria. The antibacterial activities of the fabrics were measured semi-quantitatively by the agar disk diffusion method. The results showed a significant antibacterial activity of N-TiO2 nanoparticles coated onto fabrics against bacteria. XRD analysis confirmed the anatase phase of TiO2 synthesized nanoparticles. The elemental analysis EDS over fabrics after deposition process shows the distribution of contributed elements.
