چکیده

Nowadays very complex numerical codes and enhanced material models are used to simulate the behavior of salt caverns. Simulation of the non-linear and time-dependent mechanical behavior of salt caverns requires advanced constitutive models and accurate numerical computations. LOCAS is a user-friendly finite element software specially dedicated to salt caverns, it can take into account many phenomena, allowing to simulate and understand the behavior liquid-filled and gas-filled caverns. Numerous calculation and post-processing features allow computation of many cavern features, from short-term mechanical stability to long-term subsidence. LOCAS provides 2D axisymmetric analysis of the short-term and long-term behavior of solution-mined caverns. LOCAS is probably the most advanced tool for designing and optimizing salt caverns. In addition, because many other phenomena are involved, special procedures are required to analyze thermal, chemical, and hydraulic phenomena. Although modeling a cavern is important in itself, many geotechnical engineering projects also involve modeling the well. One part of LOCAS includes modeling of the well that allows finite elements computation of the mechanical behavior of the cementation. LOCAS can be helpful in various situations when designing or analyzing caverns is difficult or impossible to perform using other software codes, for instance, the analysis of a very complex scenario, such as blowout, as it is illustrated in this paper.
