چکیده

The present research is an attempt to carry out a comparative analysis between Raymond Carver's Cathedral (1989) and Ebrahim Golestan's The Stream and The Wall and The Thirst (1351) in their deep structure. This paper analyzes silence as a factor of this structure. Most of Carver's and Golestan's short stories display prominant silences since their characters often have difficulty in communication. Due to their characters' inability to talk and express what they really mean, they find their way in expressing the feelings which cannot be put into words by use of gestures and silence. It can be assumed that language is an obstacle rather than a means of confronting that obstacle in the characters' lives for they are mostly at a loss for words managing badly with the delimited vocabularies they struggles to master, if not reduced to speechlessness outright. This study focuses on the dialogues and ways of commnunication in Cathedral (1989) and The Stream and The Wall and The Thirst (1351). The most effective ways of communication in both collections are touch and silence which can be traced in Raymond Carver's Fever , The Compartment , Preservation , Cathedral , Feathers and Golestan's Love of Green Years , Fish and Its Mate , and After Ascendance . Doing a comparative analysis, the research looks for the times when the language is not helpful and sees how the characters react in such occasions. After doing such a task, this article concludes that both Raymond Carver and Ebrahim Golestan share the same issue of silence depicting the limitation of language and failures of tongues in their short fiction since for their characters, silence is more than an outward expression of their inner self and much more than a personal response. This study also shows that the individual failures of their character's lives- the ailing and broken marriages, particularly- are recapitulated in the individual failures of their tongues. For their characters who have willful failure to articulate thoughts and feelings, silence and gestures work like a medical cure in the world of language which confuses a puzzling situation rather than sorting it out. Their fictions demonstrate how a a particular story moves from a position of language as isolating mechanism to engagement with another outside the self, and culminates with the surrender to silence which unites him with what was outside the self. Silence seems like an appropriate response at most occasions for often the characters keep quiet in dialogues and act like a listener
