Domestication and Foreignization Strategies Applied in Translation of Hyperbole in Persian Literature: A Case Study of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh Translation into English

چکیده

Translation has developed in many parts of the world and was clearly destined to continue developing well into the twenty- first century. It has been a bridge between different educational and cultural levels. The history of translation is replete with various theories proposed by translation scholars to develop some procedures and strategies to achieve an appropriate and satisfactory translation product. Focusing on two cultural translations strategies of Domestication and Foreignization postulated by Venuti, this study was a descriptive research which attempted to explore the functions of these strategies and their different procedures applied in two translations of hyperbole in Ferdowsi̕̕ s Shahnameh by Alexander Rogers and Warner brothers into English. Furthermore, this study aimed at answering whether domestication was the more frequent strategy applied in two translations of hyperbole. Through the analysis of the selected samples, it was pinpointed that the applicable procedures of domestication strategy in translations of hyperbole in Shahnameh were cultural equivalent, interpretation, addition, adaptation, approximation, syntactical adjustment and deletion. In foreignization strategy, the translators used the procedures of loan word translation and literal translation. Also the outcomes of the analysis showed that domestication was the more frequent strategy applied in two translations of hyperbole in Shahnameh.
